
Born in Beijing in 1920, Zao studied under Lin Fengmian at the National Academy of Arts in Hangzhou. In 1948, he went to Paris where he befriended with many important artists and dealers. His first solo exhibition was held at the Galerie Creuze in 1949; he proceeded to exhibit his work at the Galerie de France in Paris and Kootz Gallery in New York throughout the 1950's and 1960's. Retrospective exhibitions of his work were organized by the Taipei Fine Arts Museum and Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts in 1993 and 1995. Other major exhibitions include: Retrospective Zao Wou-Ki, the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts & the Museum of Art, Hong Kong (1996); Zao Wou-Ki, Lin & Keng Gallery, Taipei (1997); ARCO, Madrid, Spain (1998); Zao Wou-Ki, Fuji Television Gallery, Tokyo (2000); Zao Wou Ki, Recent Inks, Institut Français, Barcelona (2001); Zao Wou-Ki, Dream of Nature, Oils & Inks of the Last Twenty Years, Chenonceau, France (2002); Retrospective at the Musée du Jeu de Paume, Paris (2003-04); Bridgestone Museum of Art, Tokyo (2004).
