“In using material as metaphor, Bhalla offers us an aesthetic mediation whereby we’re drawn towards a realization of the interconnectedness of life.”
Atul Bhalla’s illustrious photography career actually began as a promising painting career. After obtaining his BFA from Delhi University, he traveled to the United States, where he graduated with an MFA from Northern Illinois University in 1990. Upon graduation, he was awarded his university’s Best Graduate Painting Award. Back in India, he received a second painting award the following year from Sahitya Kala Parishad’s Yuva Mahotsav festival.
Today his artworks run the gamut, incorporating sculpture, painting, installation, video, photography, and performance. In recent years, the photograph has been his primary medium, garnering solo exhibitions at Aicon Gallery, in London; Project 88, in Mumbai; the Anant Art Centre, Anant Art Gallery, in New Delhi; and at New Delhi’s Academy of Fine Arts and Literature. Recent group exhibitions have brought his work to Sepia International, in New York; the IVAM Institute of Modern Art, in Valencia, Spain; and the Devi Art Foundation, in New Delhi, where he lives and works.
