In 1542, the Baume family set up a workshop in the Jura Mountains of Switzerland. The descendants of Louis-Joseph Baume established their own factory in 1830 and Baume Frères was officially registered in 1834 in Bois. They produced some of the earliest chronographs. In 1847, a subsidiary, Baume Bros. was opened in London. In 1918, William Baume and Paul Mercier began a long and successful collaboration in Geneva. In 1988, Luxco, a luxury investment group, and Cartier acquired Baume & Mercier. In 1993, during a consolidation of groups, they became a member of the luxury group, Vendôme.
