The company was established in 1856 when the watchmaker Constant Girard married Marie Perregaux, sister of a famous maker of chronometers. From the outset, the company aimed at setting new records in high precision work. In 1906, when watchmaking was flourishing, the company took over the Geneva atelier of Jean Francois Butte which had been established in 1791. Girard-Perregaux is celebrated for its pioneering developments in wristwatches and quartz movements as well for its chronometers and prestigious watches. The “Tourbillon with three gold Bridges” which was awarded two gold medals at the Universal Exhibitions of 1867 and 1889 remains no doubt its most important creation.
