Hendrick Goltzius Learn about HENDRICK GOLTZIUS (1558-1617), Prints & Multiples artist, their past and upcoming works offered at auction at Christie's

Goltzius trained first with his father, a glass-painter, and then as a printmaker with Philip Galle (1537–1612), before moving in Haarlem in 1576. He married the widowed mother of Jacob Matham (1571–1631), who thereby became his stepson, and through his work as an engraver he was closely associated with Karel van Mander (q.v.) and Cornelis van Haarlem (1562–1638). He was particularly admired for his ability to work in a variety of different styles, and for his virtuoso draughtsmanship. In 1590–1 he travelled to Italy, and on his return to Haarlem he increasingly turned away from printmaking, focusing almost entirely on painting after 1600.
