“Through his art, Jagannath Panda reconciles many of our most fundamental contradictions. … His Realism believes in the existence of Fantasy.”

Peter Nagy, director, Gallery Nature Morte, New Delhi

Jagannath Panda's paintings and sculptures are often inspired by Orissa, his native state in India, and his current home outside chaotically urban New Delhi, in the rapidly-burgeoning suburb of Gurgaon. Reflecting the rapid changes of his environs—not just Gurgaon, but India as a whole—his work typically expresses the anxieties of displacement and alienation. Human progress collides with nature, humans with animals, the sacred with the profane. Panda disrupts these binaries, finding fertile ground where, as Yeats puts it, “the centre does not hold.”

His is no facile appropriation of tradition for the sake of irony. As gallerist Peter Nagy has put it, Panda is “one of the few artists of his generation who has been able to work with religious imagery,” for example, “without succumbing to the powerful trap of Kitsch.”

Born in Bhubaneshwar, in Orissa, India, Panda completed his B.F.A in sculpture at the B.K College of Arts and Crafts.  He received an M.F.A in sculpture from the Royal College of Art, in London, and was also a visiting researcher at the Fukuoka University, in Japan. He has exhibited his work at many galleries and museums in Mumbai, London, New Delhi, Tokyo and London and Berlin. He has won India’s Lalit Kala Akademi Award and the All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society Award. He lives and Works in New Delhi
