Along with his brother Jacob (circa 1585–1648) and Pieter Lastman (q.v.), Jan Pynas spent two years in Italy from 1605 to 1607, where he became acquainted with Adam Elsheimer. After his return to the Netherlands, Jan settled in Amsterdam although he may have returned to Italy for a second time in 1615. In 1656, an inventory of Rembrandt’s possessions included paintings by Pynas.
