Little is known about Johan Lagoor, who was born in Gorinchem and may have studied with Cornelis Vroom (1591–1661). From 1645 he was registered in Haarlem, where he served as ‘vinder’ (one of the chief positions) in the Guild of Saint Luke in 1649. By 1650 he was in Amsterdam, where he was declared bankrupt and afterwards, as suggested by the drawing in the present sale, he may have travelled to Italy. By his death in 1660, however, he had returned to Haarlem. |
