The son of the artist Artus van Uden (d. 1627/8), with whom he probably trained, Lucas van Uden became a master in the Guild of Saint Luke in Antwerp in 1627 and married the same year. His daughter Maria would also become an artist. A great admirer of the landscapes of Rubens, van Uden was particularly celebrated for his broad panoramas of the Flemish countryside. Throughout his life he was based in Antwerp, although he occasionally travelled elsewhere, such a trip along the Rhine which is documented in 1644.
