Paulus Potter Learn about PAULUS POTTER (1625-1654) artist, their past and upcoming works offered at auction at Christie's

Potter was the son of a still-life painter, with whom he began his training, although little is known for certain about his other teachers. In 1646 he is recorded as being in Delft, where he was a member of the painters’ guild, although by the following year he seems to have been in The Hague. He had certainly settled there by 1647 and by 1649 had joined the guild in the Hague, before marrying the daughter of the city’s architect in 1650. At this date he was living in a house rented from Jan van Goyen (1596–1656). However, in 1653 he moved to Amsterdam at the invitation of Dr Nicolas Tulp, where he died of tuberculosis the following year aged only 29.
