Satish Gujral

“These pictures have an elusive quality that retreats into profundity as you attempt to grasp it... their seeming solidity dissolves into sliding planes of color that are somehow slightly desperate, like a house of cards built before some infinite horizon.”

Brian O'Doherty, The New York Times

A multi-disciplinary artist working in painting, sculpture, murals, architecture and interior design, Satish Gujral continues to challenge the notions of Indian art. His paintings have never been purely abstract, but in the early 1960's his style gradually evolved to privilege line and texture over explicit subjects, relying on form and design to its idea and mood.

Gujral has had several solo exhibitions around the world, in venues like Art Today in New Delhi, and Forum Gallery, in New York, in 1964. In the 1970s and 1980s, his work was the subject of “Burnt Woods,” a solo exhibition that traveled across India. He has also participated in numerous group exhibitions around the world, including in the National Exposition of Contemporary Art at the National Gallery of Modern Art in New Delhi.

In his lifetime, Gujral has received many awards including The Order of the Crown from the Belgian Government; the Padma Vibhushan, the Indian Government’s second highest civilian award; a Da Vinci Award for lifetime achievement from the Mexican government; and an Amity Lifetime Achievement Award for Art, from the Amity School of Fine Arts, outside New Delhi.

Gujral was born in Jhelum, now part of Pakistan. From 1939 to 1944, he attended the May School of Arts, in Lahore, and earned a fine arts diploma from the Sir J.J. School of Arts in 1947. In 1952, Gujral was awarded a scholarship to travel to Mexico, where he worked for two years under David Siqueiros and Diego Rivera, whose mural techniques continue to inspire the multi-textural qualities and underlying symbolism in his work. He lives and works in New Delhi.
