Born in Zhejiang, China, Chen Yifei graduated from the High School for Art, Shanghai in 1965 and soon became the leading artist at the Shanghai Institute of Painting. He migrated to New York in 1980 and soon won wide acclaims from the western art world on his Chinese Realist works and several renowned solo exhibitions.
He has held solo exhibitions internationally including at the New England Centre for Contemporary Art, USA (in 1980 and consecutively in 1981, 1982 and 1983), Hammer Gallery, New York (in 1983, and in the following years of 1986, 1988 and 1990) (1983), Recent Paintings, Seibu Department Store Museum, Tokyo (1989 & 1990), The Homecoming of Chen Yifei, Retrospective Exhibition held at the Shanghai Museum and the China National Museum of Fine Arts in Beijing (1996 and 1997). In 1997, the artist participated in the exhibition titled Paintings of Tibet, Pavilion of the People's Republic of China in the XLVII Venice Biennale. In 1996-7, Chen Yifei, Première Exposition en France was organized at the Musée Granet, Aix-en-Provence. In 1999, there was his New Works exhibition at the Marlborough Gallery, New York. In 2003, his solo exhibition entitled Oeuvres Récentes’ was held at the Marlborough Gallery in Monte Carlo, Monaco. Important catalogue of the artist includes Asian Art Blooming Publishing Ltd. (ed), Huayi Publishing House, Project planned by Hammer Publishing, New York, Chen Yifei, Beijing, China, 1990. The artist passed away in 2005, and in memory of him, an exhibition entitled Ancient Water Towns in Jiangnan was held in Zhouzhuang, China in 2007.
