Lastman’s initial artistic training was with Gerrit Pietersz. Sweelinck, in the tradition of Goltzius, Cornelis van Haarlem and Dutch Mannerism, but in 1603 he embarked on a formative trip to Rome. Here he became influenced by the works of Adam Elsheimer, Caravaggio and the Carracci, and on his return to Amsterdam in 1607 he turned away from the Mannerism of his training to a more Italianate style. He was successful and much admired throughout his career, with many pupils, including Rembrandt (q.v.) and Jan Lievens (q.v.).
