Cornelis Visscher

Learn about CORNELIS VISSCHER (1628-1658) artist, their past and upcoming works offered at auction at Christie's

Born in Haarlem, Visscher was one of three artist brothers, the others being Jan (circa 1636–1700) and Lambert Visscher (circa 1633–1690). He seems to have been a student of Pieter Soutman (circa 1600–1657) and was registered in the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1653, later moving to Amsterdam  in his late twenties. He died very young, as the age of only 29, but he was already celebrated for his skill as a portraitist, particularly for his small-scale black-chalk studies on vellum. He was also a successful printmaker who published etchings of compositions by his fellow artists from Haarlem.
