Anjolie Ela Menon was born in India of mixed Bengali and American ancestry.  She attended The Lawrence School, Lovedale in the Nilgiri Hills, Tamil Nadu and continued her education at the Sir J.J. School of Art in Bombay.  A scholarship enabled her to study at Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris between 1961 and 1962.  Before returning home, she travelled extensively in Europe and West Asia studying Romanesque and Byzantine art.  Menon has had over thirty solo shows including the Winston Gallery in Washington, Doma Khudozhinkov in Russia, Rabindra Bhavanand Shridharani Gallery in New Delhi, Academy of Fine Arts in Calcutta, and Maya Gallery at the Museum Annex in Hong Kong.  Also well known for her murals, she has represented India at the Algiers Biennale, the São Paulo Biennale, Brazil and three triennials in New Delhi.  She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2000. She lives and works in New Delhi.
