Bloemaert began his training with his father Cornelis (1603–1692) but afterwards spent time in Paris and Utrecht, studying with a number of masters including Joos de Beer, whose own master had been Frans Floris. He travelled to Amsterdam with his father in 1591 but returned to settle in Utrecht in 1593, where he became a founder member of the Guild of Saint Luke in 1611 and was elected dean of the Guild in 1618. His versatility and adaptability as an artist meant that he was successful across many different genres and in different media, providing designs for tapestries and stained glass as well as for paintings. He enjoyed great renown during his lifetime and was the master of some of the most significant painters of the next generation, including Gerrit van Honthorst, Hendrick Ter Brugghen, and Cornelis Poelenburgh.
