Asprey was founded in 1781 by William Asprey in Mitcham, Surrey. Initially a producer of dressing cases, they eventually moved to London and began manufacturing jewellery, silver, gold boxes and fine leather goods. In 1861, they were appointed jeweller to QueenVictoria. Beginning in the 1950s, the firm developed an important Middle Eastern clientele. In 1995, the Asprey Group was purchased by Prince Jeffrey Bolkiah of Brunei. In 1998, he merged Asprey with another of his companies, Garrard, The Crown Jewellers. This company, Asprey & Garrard, was then purchased by a private partnership in 2000 and subsequently demerged in 2002. Asprey remains in the original New Bond Street site and is now also located on Fifth Avenue in New York City.
