One of the most celebrated Dutch artists of the Golden Age, Ruisdael was the son of the painter Isaak van Ruisdael (1599–1677) and nephew of Salomon van Ruysdael (circa 1600–1670), studying with both. His earliest known paintings date from his late teens and he joined the Guild of Saint Luke in Haarlem in 1648 at the age of only nineteen. By 1657, however, he had moved to Amsterdam, where he joined the Reformed Church and became a citizen in 1659. He remained in Amsterdam until his death, although his body was taken back to Haarlem to be buried at Saint Bavo’s. His most notable pupil was Meindert Hobbema, who worked with him as both student and assistant for many years.
