Jacob Stainer (1619-1683) is one of the great craftsmen of the 17th century and a leading violin maker of the Austro-German school. For well over a century his instruments rank alongside, if not above, the best Cremonese makers. The delicate features and elegant execution of Stainer’s instruments had significant influence on makers throughout Venice, Florence, Germany, England and Austria. Today these graceful instruments with soft varnish and bright, sweet tone continue to be highly prized among both collectors and musicians.
