Born in 1924, and trained at the Kala Bhawan, Santinikentan, and the Slade School of Art, London, his teachers were masters Ramkinkar Baij and Nandalal Bose. He has received various prestigious honours during his career including the Medallion of Honourable Mention, Sao Paulo Biennale, Brazil (1961); the National Award Lalit Kala Academy award (1965),; the Fellowship of J.D Rockerfeller III Fund (1966); the Padma Shree from the Government of India (1975); Honorary Doctorates from Rabindra Bharati University (1992) and Banaras Hindu University (1997); the Kala Ratna, from Lalit Kala Academy (2005); and most recently, the Padma Bhushan in 2006. His works are in many collections around the world including the V & A (London), NGMA (Delhi), Birla Academy of Art & Culture (Calcutta), Musee de l’Art (France).
