Born in Kunming in 1958, Zhang graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts, Chongqing, Sichuan province in 1982. Zhang grew up with political upheavals known as the Cultural Revolution in China and it had a certain influence on his work. After graduation, he joined a group of young avant-garde painters and came to prominence during the 1980s. Since then, he has established himself as one of the leading artists in the Contemporary Chinese art world. Zhang has also been awarded prizes for his works, such as the Bronze Prize at the 22nd São Paulo Biennial Exhibition in Brazil in 1994 and the Document Prize at the First Academic Exhibition of Chinese Contemporary Art held at the China National Museum of Fine Arts and Hong Kong Art Centre in 1996.
